You might not want to call this one a ‘pet.’ Jessica the hippo was taken in by a couple (a human couple, no less) after having been separated from her parents by a flood right after being born.
Tony, the husband, luckily knew the formula through previous work, and they were able to feed Jessica right away. Jessica is not in captivity – she actually comes and goes as she sees fit, often going back to the wild on a regular basis, only to come back home to her adopted parents. She sleeps with the dog and eats in the kitchen with the family, just like a human daughter would. A wildlife expert teaches us about how ‘imprinting’ allows this to be possible due to an animal bonding to the first thing they see.
